Hi guys -

I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I'm running a personal web server
(www fileshare pro) and all of a sudden, no one can connect to my server and
I have not changed anything. I've tried disabling the firewall and antivirus
and still the same results. I also notice now that when someone tries to
connect, my Norton Antivirus pops up a security alert screen. It says
"Norton internet worm protection has detected a remote system that is
attempting to access your computer. if you've started a program that
requires internet access such as online gaming, file sharing, or instant
messaging, then select permit to allow the program to continue." When I hit
permit, they still can not connect. Everyone's getting the page cannot be
displayed error. I've tried changing to a different port and same thing
happens.

This was working perfectly last week. The only thing I can think of is that
Norton was updated with this 'Norton Worm Protection' because I've never
gotten this pop up before.

Can anyone help me troubleshoot this please? Any suggestions?? Thanks in
advance.

You've done an excellent job in Sherlocking this and have discovered the
clear cause-and-effect. The Norton Worm Protection is a firewall,
similar to the one that comes with XP SP2. If you are already using
XP's firewall, disable Norton's. If you have a different third-party
firewall running, disable Norton's. I don't know if you can configure
Norton's Worm Protection to work with your web server.

Hi Malke,

Thanks for responding.

I am using Sygate Personal Firewall. The firewall in XP has been disabled
since I installed it. I tried disabling the Norton Worm Protection too and
no one still could not connect. I checked the traffic log in Sygate and I
can see that it's allowing the people to connect but everyone is getting an
error message. I have verified that the port is properly configured in the
router setup.

Any other things I could try?

I'm sorry, but I don't provide support for any Symantec products and
this is exactly why. Here is a link to Symantec tech support:

Other things to check:

1. Settings in the Sygate Firewall. I know you don't think anything
changed, but make sure the necessary port for your webserver is open.

2. Does your ISP know you are running a webserver? Do you have their
permission and/or pay extra for this? They may have shut you down if
this is against their Terms of Service.

Hi Malke,

All is fine now. I have no idea if my ISP knows I'm running a server, but
it's not from their space - it's local on my hard drive.

Thanks,
Newtechie
