Just did a clean install on a 633 celeron, 15 gig drive
(installed as stand-alone os)256 Ram . A windows pop up
keeps asking for the install disk, stating that critical
files have been replaced with unknown versions. If I put
the install disk in the cdrom drive, cd rom and hard
drive lights indicate some file transfer activity for a
minute or so, then the message box goes away; as soon as
I remove the install disk, the box comes back. I can't
beleive this is normal; any ideas? The install disk is
an upgrade version of Windows XP Home Edition; I used a
Win ME upgrade disk for verification during setup.

Something is replacing Windows files with modified versions
just as soon as you get them repaired.
Were you connected to the network before you got the new
(upgrade) install up-to-date on service ? Or rather, were you
so connected without the firewall turned on, and/or did you
install something or read email without antivirus running ? etc.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I was connected to the
internet via cable modem during install, and yes, I
downloaded some programs before I realized that the XP
firewall was not configured. I downloaded Mozilla and
Openoffice; any known concerns there?

Being connected without the firewall before installing
all XP released service is hazardous to system health.
After install (disconnected), enable firewall and immediately
get the machine up-to-date on all released service.
Then start other actions such as software installation.
