ASK and SET fields

Where might I find definitive, step-by-step instructions on creating these fields (and codes) for bookmarks? What kind of capabilities do they have? Word "Help" isn't helping.
 
I would recommend starting by simply using Insert => Field => ASK. Then take
a look at what you get with Alt-F9. You need a REF field to pick up the
results of your ASK field.
