ASCII code for Tab Issue

When I try and put the ASCII code for tab chr(9) (?) in a text box it gives
me a symbol like [] instead of a tab. I've seen several post about
carriage returns and line feeds where you need to use two items back to
back. Is this a similar issue? Any help is greatly appreciated.
