As I type, my letters don't appear - why? Big Delay!

When typing an e-mail, the characters I type are delayed - sometimes I am
four or five words ahead of what is actually appearing on the screen. This
seems to be only happening in Outlook. Any ideas? I am also experiencing a
real slowing when opening e-mails - and this was not the case before -
something new! AND I don't like it, and I know there is an easy answer. Can
you help?

Have you scanned for malware (viruses, trojans, spyware, adware)?

Have you checked what, if any, add-ons and plug-ins are installed in Outlook
(Tools -> Options -> Other -> Advanced)?

Have you tried starting Outlook in its safe mode ("outlook.exe /safe")?

Have you tried rebooting Windows into its Safe Mode? If it works, use
msconfig.exe to disable all startup programs, reboot into normal mode, check
again. Then enable one startup item and repeat until the problem reappears.
When it reappears, you know the last startup item that you enabled causes
the problem.

I see the same thing happening when Outlook is communicating with the
Exchange Server, especially a remote Exchange Server. It is usually when
checking for new mail or receiving new mail.
