Argh! Table Styles

So, having read Shauna's material, and the stuff at MVPS.org, and having
using MS Word for 20 years (since version 2 - I'm now using Word 2002), I
decided to take a crack at making some table styles so that I could
autoformat the hundreds of tables in my book.

Bad move.

I started with an existing style, modified it to how I wanted, then copied
it to my template. Since each chapter is in a different document, I then
used the organizer to copy my (modified) table style to each of my 25
documents.

When I opened the documents to check on them, they seemed fine. I sent them
all off to my colleague (who is using Mac Word), and when they came back:
presto chango, all the tables were all different.

So I went into one document to try and fix it, and lo and behold, even
though my tables are still formatted in some weird way, my table style is
no-where to be found.

I'm guessing that Word handles table styles differently than regular
styles - is that right? Perhaps they aren't real styles the way Paragraph
styles are, but are maybe just some embedded macros that apply hard-coded
formatting to the tables?

If that's the case, is there anyway to format the tables and have them stay
that way?

And, if my publisher should decide the tables need to be formatted
differently, is there anyway to universally change all the tables at once?

The general consensus is that table styles are not ready for prime time.
Sorry.
