Are Hard drive utilities uniiqueto brand?

Some hard drive manufactures have utilities that will check that your drive
is working correctly. when your online. Would these utilities me unique to
brands or can you use any utility on any brand?
 
The utility would normally work on any drive of the same type but some
manufacturers check the drive ID and if it is not their own ID, they prevent
the program from working.
 
I still have several drives & don't know which one is currently in machine.
Norton's Systemsworks gives lots of details but not this

There really is no need for an average user to know this information and
Norton will probably not show it but one place you will always see it is
when you boot your PC and your bios is set up to show you what it is doing
during boot....during the IDE detect, it will show you the names if drives
attached to each IDE port. These are the ID's I am talking about. If you own
partitioning software with some of these you can also see these names.
