archiving e-mails -- box capacity

I was able to move old e-mails I wanted to save to a new
folder, but I'm not sure if that folder still affects
operations of Outlook. I've been having some
intermittent problems sending e-mail, and I'm not sure if
the number of e-mails I have affects this at all. Does
anyone know:

1. Is performance of Outlook affected by number of
messages in inbox/sent box?

2. If so, does moving to another folder within Outlook
help or is it a cumulative number of messages?

3. If it is cumulative, what is the best way to save
wanted old messages to a file OUTSIDE of Outlook?

Thanks. Would appreciate any responses to be cc to my e-
mail.

How many messages are we talking about here? There are limits on the number
of messages you can store in a given folder, and in Outlook 2002 and
earlier, on the size of the .PST file overall. You don't mention the exact
nature of the problems you're having when sending e-mail, or your Outlook
version for that matter :-)

Gene,

Outlook performance is definately impacted by mailbox size and #messages.
Moving messages around and into subfolders increased my Outlook's
performance. You could archive the old stuff off... or do it selectively by
hand.

To duplicate your emails into a seperate mailbox, add a new PST to your
Outlook then drag-drop each folder you want to keep from one PST to the
other.

When you're done, and especially if you're copying stuff around in the
*same* mailbox, you should compact it down again either by hand or with
something like PSTComapactor (www.pstcompactor.com)
