hey everyone, lately i've come across this problem which is everytime i
connect to AOL apps take forever to open and i don't know why but as soon as
i disconnect they work fine. i've tried virus scans, ad-aware etc yet no
solution.....can sumnoe plzzz help me!!! thanx

I know this won't be helpful, and someone else should reply to your problem,
but I just can't help myself. My answer for ya.... don't use AOL. In all
honesty, I've never had nothing but problems whenever I use AOL with their
software. I have an account with them, but use a different ISP to access the
internet, and there software is NOT allowed on my computer. My family either
uses their own computers, or they can read their e-mail from AOL's website.
No matter how much they ask me to put AOL 9.0 on my computer, it is NOT
gonna be installed (nor AOL IM, or any other application made for/by AOL).
Their software does nothing but cause problems.

lol hey Craters, the thing is AOL was doing fine till yesterday and now this
happens but i remember shutting down my computer by pulling the plug cause it
froze for some reason, could it be that? would recovery console help? and if
so will i lose my documents and other files if i did recovery console?

Oh No!!! Shouldn't have pulled the plug, that's always a big no no, but
sometimes unavoidable.
I'm assuming that you're speaking of the System Recovery utility, no you
won't loose any documents that are saved on your hard drive, you will loose
any programs you've installed after the date you choose to recover from
though. Before doing anything, you may want to back up anything (documents &
other files) before proceeding, just in case. You may want to check AOL's
website, I think they may have something to recovery their software with, or
if you weren't running any other app's when ya pulled the plug, you may just
want to uninstall (Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs) AOL. When
you select it, it may give you a few options, one of which may be "Repair".
If there isn't a "Repair" selection, you can always try removing AOL, and
re-installing it. You may loose whatever information you have saved via
AOL's software though (like saved e-mails), so be careful.

Also, depending on your system, instead of pulling the plug next time, try
holding the power button for a few seconds.

lol well the thing is craters, i've reinstalled AOL again but it doesnt help
i would've gone for system restore but i had that turned off well before :(
....i've got alot of documents and music files and i don't want to lose them
so would system recovery leave them alone? if so how do i go through this
process.

I haven't used the Recovery Console in ages, so I don't remember what
information on your system it will affect. I don't think (not very sure at
all) it will affect your documents and music files. I have alot myself. So
if you have a CD or DVD burner (or another hard drive) I would back up that
stuff before using it. Personnally, I back-up my data to another hard drive,
my system has two, every so often. It's too bad you turned off the System
Restore, it would probably fix your problem. My advise, turn it back on once
you get this problem resolved ;)

You may want to check with AOL before doing anything, you might find
additional help there. Plus if you're using 9.0 I believe it has those
"AutoFix" things they advertise all the time (not that I trust them
myself... LOL), that might be helpful to ya. Here's a link to their "Help"
section of their web-site:
http://help.channels.aol.com/topic.adp?catId=6&sCId=438

Also, have you run scandisk lately? Or Defrag? You might try those,
especially scandisk. To check your disk (hard drive) open My Computer and
right click on your drive. Click Properties. Click the Tools tab. There you
will find an "Error-checking" section and "Defragmentation" section, as well
as the "Backup" section. Click the Check Now... button to run scandisk,
select both the options in the window that pops up and click start. It may
want to restart your system in order to perform its function properly, let
it. After that's done, run the Defrag (which may take a while depending on
the last time you've done this, not many people do and should at least once
a month). See if that helps anything, it can't hurt anything anyway and will
be helpful to your system in the long wrong. If it doesn't seem to help
anything, then attempt to use the Recovery Console. I would try anything and
everything else first though, use the Recovery Console as an absolute last
resort, not knowing what info its going to affect. You may also want to
clear out the internet temp folders, you can do this from Internet Explorer
or from the Control Panel. Click Start, Control Panel, Internet Options, and
in the Temporary Internet files section click Delete Files..., which may
also take some time. That's something else you want to do on a regular
basis.

Depending on which version of XP your using (assuming your using XP since
that's the newsgroup) you can find information about the Recovery Console at
the following links:

Pro Edition:

Sorry I couldn't be of more help to ya.

I'm afraid you'll need to contact AOL's tech support for resolution
of problems with (or caused by) their product; Microsoft has no
control over AOL's product quality (or lack thereof).
