Applications Slow to Open

After I installed a cable modem, the first time I try to open an application
or anything like display properties, system properties, msconfig, etc., it
takes a minute or two to open. Once it's been open and closed, it opens
again okay. This never happened until the cable modem. Any thoughts?

What is the virus/malware status of the computer? If you think it is
clean, what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

If the computer is clean, did you install some software from your cable
Internet company? It is not necessary to install any ISP software to
make a connection to a cable modem. Perhaps you now have ISP monitoring
and/or "self-support" garbage programs running at startup. Use the
System Configuration Utility to troubleshoot this:

Go to Start>Run and type (without quotes) "msconfig" [enter]. This
brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab and
find the probable culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, Apply and
OK out. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do
you'll get a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Just tick the box
that says in effect, "don't bother me about this again".

Hopefully you didn't install any proprietary ware that came with the
cable modem. If so, then remove it.
