I'm missing applications in my IE 6.0. When I opened IE by doing a right
click on start, applications was always the first category under Local Disk
(C:) None of the applications are there. How can I get the section back in
IE. Every program on my pc works perfectly. I wanted to check settings
under the applications and found the entire category was missing. Please
help.

IE is an internet browser. What applications do you expect it to have?

Thank you for your speedy response. I'm sorry, it's explorer. The list was
always showing the following:
desktop
my documents
my computer
31/2 floppy (A:)
Local Disk (C:)
then applications with all the categories listed. It had a number of
applications listed such as settings, temp files, history, cookies etc.
listed.

Now most of my programs are not showing when I click on start and all
programs from the desktop. The programs are still installed and I can open
them from explorer but I can't get them back into the programs menu that I
see when I click start. I know I'm virus/trojan/spyware etc. free because I
run Adaware/Spybot/A2square on a daily basis and keep them updated. I also
have Zone Alarm firewall and AVG antivirus and keep them updated at all
times. I just don't understand what's going on. I haven't installed any new
programs or hardware.

Please help.

Thanks for replying. I'm sorry I meant to say explorer. I explained
everything in my latest post.

I don't understand what you mean by am I doing it correctly. I have used a
pc for over 10 years and I know to open any programs on your pc you click
start then all programs and when that's clicked all your downloaded programs
show up. Mine are no longer listed. None of them. The applications problem
is in Explorer. Right click on start then click explore. The list of
applications are missing. They have been there ever since I purchased a new
pc when XP was first introduced. I use the explore section on a daily basis
and I know every program etc that was listed there. I check it daily to make
sure nothing has been added to my pc that I didn't know about. Thanks for
your reply.

Linda, I didn't mean anything rude but at the same time we come across
questions here when people aren't sure whether they want Windows
Explorer or Internet Explorer. Both can do the same job if you look at
it from an experienced user!. I have browsed the web with Windows
Explorer - hard to believe but true!!!

Any way, can you browse/see your c-drive? Has it got anything on it
when you look at it with Windows Explorer?

It looks like all the shortcuts have been deleted and now this needs to
be rebuilt slowly. But first let us know whether you can see anything
on the see drive. I am not talking about shortcuts on Start, All
Programs etc etc.

Hope to hear from you.

Thanks for your reply. When I look at my C drive some of the programs are
missing. I have a feeling I will end up reformatting and I just did a
complete reformat last month. grrrrr I tried to do a system restore and it
refuses to restore back to my last restore point. Any suggestions? Thank
you.

OK. have you done all the backups of your OWN documents such as
word/excel files, Email files, some downloaded files? your pictures.

Get details of your ISP - pop3/smtp, telephone numbers, their CDs if
any.

Collect all the application CDs with serial numbers - Office,
Nero/Roxio, Adobe professional (if applicable) etc et

Is your operating CD first edition? If so you better donload or order a
SP2 patch from Microsoft website. (don't worry about other patches as
yet!) - SP2 is very important to have it inhouse before going online.

Collect driver CD for your system - DELL normally supplies you this but
it can be downloaded. i lik yo have it now just in case it is not
online!!

Get Windows Defender beta 2 from Microsoft Website. Also, get a CD for
your anti-virus. Or get free from GRISOFT website.

So you get the idea. Make a list of things you will need before going
online for more updates.

I think you said you have scanned your system everyday. did you do this
with updated signature files? Which anti-virus did you use?

All in all, I want you to do a methodical approach to installing the OS
so that this things don't happen again. I rather spend some time
planning before russhing into it. Easter is not vry far so perhaps you
want to plan in the meantime and use old system if possible/available.

As to recovery, Jupitor Jones, Rock, Ken et al will help you out. But
please start planning now as nothing is better than restaring from
scratch and getting it right. document your actions so that you know
what has been done and what is still outstanding.

It's sounds as though you have no solutions other than another reformat. I
backup everything on my pc and keep them up-to-date. I normally reformat all
my pc's, 98, Me and XP, once a year to keep them running smoother so the
backups are necessary. I also have all the CD's that came with the pc's and
the bootup floppies for the 98 and Me therefore, reformatting is much faster
and easier.

I run Zone Alarm, AVG, Lavasoft Adaware, A2squared and Spybot on all the
pc's and keep them up-to-date at all times. Adawaqre and Spybot are ran
daily. I also have the Spyware protection from AOL.

I can run all my programs from Explore and the only solution I can see is to
reinstall the missing programs from the shortcut so they will again appear in
my start, programs list. Since the pc is working just fine even though
applications aren't showing in Explore and since I just reformated this thing
last month, I think I will hold off and see what happens.

Thank you for the rapid response and answers.

Linda,

Your c-Drive doesn't contain anything (you said that!!!) and yet it is
functionin normally [you said that]. How can I explain this to you? I
have never come across any systems running properly when the HD is
blank!

How can you be sure that your system is clean when the program files
have been deleted [ you said applications missing]. Let me tell you one
thing. It is not easy to delete program files when the user is logged
in as a limited user. Have you created a limited user account for your
everyday use? If so, are you using it for its intended purpose? If not
why not?

There is no point in re-installing programs if the cause hasn't been
investigated. The cause is still in your system and it should be
cleared before your system starts infecting computers all over the
world. Some Russian weirdo has taken control over your system and must
be spamming [and infecting] everybody because you have decided not to do
anything about it.

Good luck and don't blame me for not warning you!!

Are you the same Linda Williams who had a spyware problems and yet
wanted to ignore it? A message from your namesake was posted on: Sun, 2

You must act for any advice you get here otherwise people will stop
responding to your requests.

I don't know who you think you are accusing me of something like this. If
you would read what I wrote you would see that I said some of the programs
are missing from C: I keep my pc clean of all pests. I run programs daily to
make sure it stays that way. I have no idea who Linda Williams is and could
care less. All I wanted was an answer to why Explorer was no longer showing
applications and why programs were no longer in my start menu. You have no
business replying to any of these questions. Please never reply to mine ever
again. I'm getting ready to reformat my pc again because I came to the
conclusion that's the only way it will be exactly as it should be. Your
problem from the beginning has been you didn't read everything I wrote. Now
leave me alone!!!! You are nuts!!!
