Application to switch off the screen?

Well, not really switch off as such, but you know how it goes on
standby when not used for a while. Well, I need an application that
would do that with a keyboard shortcut, while allowing me to continue
typing, till I click the same or another keyboard shortcut and it
switches it on again.

Why? I'm typing stuff for an hour or so at a time, and I don't really
need the screen on, but don't want to click the button, not out of
laziness, but worry that it may be too harsh to switch it on and off
manually and it may just be better if it's done by the machine.

Makes sense? no?

Well, whatever, any ideas?

No.

1) Typing will bring the screen back again.
2) The only "harshness" in clicking a button is one more click on the
mouse. Since the life of the mouse buttons is limited (to some
extremely huge number), this does shorten the life of your mouse. (You
won't live long enough for it to make any difference.)

What you really need is a program to access the video card and turn
off the video. There are a few that can be set to work from keyboard
macros, but I haven't seen one in a few years - they may still be
available - and they all bring the screen back when you hit a key.
Look for SSSwitch (ScrnSaveSwitch/Plus). The copy I have installed in
an old drive is dated 3/1/1999.
