application install

I would like to install seldomly used applications in an external hardrive.
Is this feasible? I know it will not be accessible when the drive is not
connected but will it affect the system, e.g. other applications, registry,
etc?

Probably not, but...

An obvious exception is if the newly installed program or some part of
if wanted to be automatically started on bootup or when you login to
your account. I'd guess that you would be alright doing this with
nearly all programs, but there must be a few that wouldn't like it.
