application hang up

More often I'm getting an application hang up event ID
1002. Described in my event log. I have windows XP and
Office XP. Everything locks up when I try to access word
files for e-mail attachments. My hard drive sounds like
it's going to fly out of my tower. The only solution I
have is to manually shut off power then reboot. What the
hey is going on....anybody..
