Over the past month I've been getting an increase in (i dont know the
technical name) application freezes, where i can move the mouse and use
programs already open, but trying to open anything just doesn't work. When
the computer gets to this state, I also can't turn off the computer unless I
turn off the power bar, which i know is just horrible for the hardware and is
probably damaging the computer every time i do it.
i have a norton firewall and a norton antivirus, ad-aware, and AVG. They
all do daily scans. When I get home from classes, i usually have about 15
messages from Norton saying it blocked a port-scan attack and it deleted a
trojan. Does this have anything to do with the freezing?
Should I re-format? Or is there some other way?
I'm running Windows XP Home Edition, with SP2 as of when it came out. My
computer is a Cicero SH4660.
I've also installed an Audigy 2 Platinum and an NVIDIA FX 5200 on my own in
adjacent optical bays. My hard-drive is 46GB full of pretty important
material, if a re-format is avoidable, it would be in my best interests.
Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.
