When I format the cells, there is a stray apostrophe in
the text bar, but not in the cell. How do I get rid of it?

On the cell, press F2 (Edit mode) then Home (key) to send cursor to far-left
of cell-content, then use Delete-key to eliminate the single " ' ", then
Enter.

Johnny,

That apostrophe is called a "prefix," and indicates that the contents is
text - not to be interpreted as a number, formula, or anything else. Text
is text, and is displayed as entered. Otherwise, an entry starting with =
(also + or - sometimes) is interpreted as a formula, an entry that looks
like a date is converted to a date-serial number, with date formatting. And
more. If you remove it, unintended things may happen. Depends on what's in
the cell.

Don't know if this will help. Go to <Tools> <Options>, "Transition Tab",
and remove the check on "Transition navigation keys." This may have Excel
act like Lotus and show the "Prefix" character.
