I have been using AOL for about 2 months and had no problem with it until today when I signed on and after 2 minutes of being signed on, I got an error message that said, "Error with DLL as an APP" then the computer restarts. It does this all the time to all the user names even on Compuserve except for one account on CS which is a kids account.

What does a scan with a current antivirus program (meaning a version not
earlier than 2002 and using updated virus definitions) show? Also,
remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy from
www.safer-networking.org and Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure
to update these programs before running them. These programs are free,
so run them both since they complement each other. It is best to run
antivirus and spyware removal tools in Safe Mode. You may also need to
run CWShredder from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/index.html .
Please read the instructions carefully. A great resource for dealing
with spyware is http://www.spywareinfo.com. Also, make sure you've
visited Windows Update and applied all security patches. Make sure you
are running a firewall.

hey, aol sucks and is not the internet. but beware when
uninstalling. it may wreak some files as a going away
present. and it now comes with 25% more spyware. so run
spybot safer-networking.org to confirm this.

AOL is the single most predominant virus/parasite/worm that exists today.
It corrupts windows files, destroys functionality, and replaces many windows
files with proprietary AOL version of the same file. Uninstalling usually
leads to massive problems..only sure way to gracefully recover is to
reformat.

I'm having the same symptoms and they just started today. I'm using a kids account as it's the only one that works. I have a 5/12/04 Norton virus definition file and a scan ran clean yesterday. Running one now also. Never really played with the spyware remover. Nobody admits to downloading anything or installing anything recently... Also on XP home and a lot of the recent updates are in.

No, AOL's biggest downfall is it's Proprietary setup. Users over time
learn little if anything about standard Windows components. If and when
they leave AOL and move to a different Internet Service Provider they
do not know how to use Outlook Express or Internet Explorer.

Just try and migrate AOL/CompuServe data to a standard format.
It can be done but not easily. { People complain about Microsoft, but in
reality, it is things like AOL/Real Audio that are the problem }

Whenever I setup a new PC, I always try to discourage owners from
using the ISP's interface software and use Windows components instead.

The virus scan completed, but I need one of the unrestricted accounts to update the signature file and/or install the two latest window updates, and they aren't working...
