I don't use AOL on my pc. I uninstalled the AOL that came with this pc,but
when I go into the REGEDIT and do a find on AOL there are folders that come
up (AOL) can I delete all the folders from AOL? Thanks if you can help

There is only one sure-fire way to totally remove AOHELL from a system - and
that's to format the drive. Unfortunately, that may not help in this case
because it was probably included in the recovery CD that the manufacturer
provided with the machine and setting the system back to factory settings
(which is what you'd have to do) will just restore it along with everything
else.

The only solution I can come up with is to purchase a retail version -
unless anyone else has any bright ideas...

Yup, delete any key, string value that refers to AOL; you'll have no
problem. You can clean the registry of any Netscape reference as well. Then
use RegClean or such utility to purge any other dead registry references.
Also, search for any AOL files and delete them.

An AOL pre-installation file and associated icon would reappear on a new
install, but the OP could ignore it completely or delete as a first step
after having Fdisked, Formatted and re-installed..

Before such drastic action, I would look for the sound byte "You've got
mail", save it to a diskette, and reset it as the default incoming mail
sound.. just for posterity, eh..

Anywhere I can download the 'You've got mail" sound byte?

Yes, but it would reinstall all the other AOHELL garbage - the DLLs, the
executables all of which the OP is attempting to be rid of (ye gads how I
hate ending a sentence with a preposition!).

Is it still Joanna Lumley...? Used to be on the British version... Except it
wasn't "you've got mail" it was "you've got post".

The AOL pre-installation file would just 'call' for a link to AOL on the
internet, thereafter initiating a request to download the offending
material.. the complete AOL exists on AOL CDs, but unless the user
implements the CD, all should be well.. I wouldn't have thought that any
version of XP, be it a retail, OEM or vendor recovery would carry the entire
installation..

Apologies for not ending with a preposition.. I have a tendency to end some
sentences in such form as I think of what to say next, but then reword to
eliminate any incidence of such careless grammar.. for the most part, nobody
in these groups would notice 'ere for one stickler.. she is noted for being
a regular martinet regarding use of English as exercised by colonials..
watch out for her.. she is a 'good' egg really, but can impart crushing
blows to the uninitiated.. :-)

Sadly, the only practical way I've ever found to completely
remove AOL from an operating system is to format the hard drive and
perform a clean installation. I absolutely loathe having to resort to
a hard drive format to fix what should be a relatively minor issue,
but it takes a lot less time than manually removing/replacing all of
the Windows system files that AOL replaces with their own versions and
the hundreds of unnecessary registry entries.

The registry items do no harm. If you insist on deleting them, back
up the entire registry first, or better yet your entire drive.
