any virtual machines out there other than Bochs or DOSbox ?

Depends on what you want to do, and from which OS. QEMU is another one, as
I understand it it's somewhat based on Bochs, but I'm not realy sure. Tell
us where you are finding shortcomings, and maybe there's a solution in
Bochs or DOSbox you're not aware of.

i need it for os development testing. vmware is good for this but i
can't use my licensed work copy at home; bochs is too confusing (unelss
there is a forum for help or a frontend somewhere i can't find); and
DOSbox is mainly for msdos/pcdos isn't it?

Yes - also to provide a VM for MSDOS programs which otherwise won't run
under WinXP etc. It will also get round firmware problems such as the IBM
ThinkPad laptops which won't run DOS programs.

the windows version of QEMU is no longer available :-(

I have an older version of QEMU here.

C:\Downloads>dir *qemu*
31/05/2005 14:26 1.714.018 QemuInstall-0.7.0.exe

I just need a way of sending it.
