when you ran it through email a Genie would pop up and read your email to
you? I think you could get it to read other docs too.

I am specifically looking for the program I mentioned.
 
I've heard a title similar to what you have described,
called"OESpeaker",which runs in outlook express,but I don't think it
can works in other docs,
or you can use TextAloud, which is a cool text to speech application,

Using Microsoft agent this can be done.

Try to ask in microsoft.public.msagent if no answer here.
