Is the 'icon' called ~$filename ? It sounds as though you have the desktop
set as the document location or the temp file location. Windows 98 is rather
poor when it comes to housekeeping and often forgets to delete its temporary
files, when you quit applications or Windows itself. Change the Windows temp
file location to c:\windows\temp or c:\temp and the documents location to a
documents folder. Ensure that any orphaned temp files are removed from time
to time. It's been a long time since I used Win98, but I seem to recall that
you set the temp location from the auutoexec.bat file - I would check with a
Windows 98 newsgroup.
You can safely temporary files when the application that creates them is
closed. The best time to do so is immediately after switching the PC on.
