Any way to use windows XP backup without an "A" floppy drive?

Hello and thanks for being out there! I have a panasonic W2 laptop with no
floppy drive. Using WinXP pro and I have a cd/rw drive built in. Trying to
backup to a USB 2.0 external hard drive. The drive is recognized by windows
backup program, but after preparing to back up, it reports there's no floppy
drive (duh!) and aborts the backup. Any way to tell it to create the
recovery disk on the cd/rw drive? Any workaround?

Related question: If no solution to above, votes on the best dos based
backup program that will write to a USB drive (and, BTW, if you use a dos
based program, does the drive have to be FAT32 or can it be NTFS?) Lots of
bad press on the forums about Ghost 9 and Drive Image 8 regarding inability
to capture a reliable snapshot of the active partition during backup.
that's it for now... and thanks again
