Is there anyway to unsend an email once it's been sent
but before it's been read?
The Recall feature in Outlook works by sending a special message to the
recipient. If you and the recipient are using the same Exchange mail
server, there is a chance the message will get deleted before the
recipient sees it. From what I hear from Exchange users, it is a flaky
function. If the recipient is using POP3 then Outlook will send its
special message. However, if the user sorts their e-mails from oldest
to newest then obviously they will read your original message before
they open your special message that performs the delete. Also, even if
the special message is opened first, I've yet to see it actually delete
the original message. So doing a recall from an Internet recipient so
rarely works, if ever, that you would have a far better chance of
winning at the $1M slot machine. Also, the special message only works
if the recipient is also using Outlook as their e-mail client.
So, basically no, you cannot recall a message once you submit it to your
outbound mail server. If you have recurring troubles in sending
messages that you should not, disable the immediate send feature of
Outlook and also disable scheduled mail polls (or just remove the send
from the scheduled mail polls). Then compose your message, wait an
hour, and then send your message when you have cooled down or when
looking at it with fresh eyes to ensure you want to send it and that you
are sending it to the correct recipient. The user is in control.
That's you. Once YOU chose to send it, well, it's sent.
