I use a third party program for putting program icons on the systray,
I could put as many as the screen would hold in Win98... so am
wondering if there's a way to remove the limit that seems to be in
XP..

Use "customise task bar" to hide the inactive icons - they will still be
there if needed, but will be hidden from view.

Right-click a blank area of the task bar, click Properties then to the
bottom of the dialogue "Hide Inactive Icons" and click "Customise" : the
choices are such as "Hide when inactive", "Always Hide", and "Always Show".

yes, I'm aware I can hide the icons, but I don't want to.. I want them
ALL there all the time... but XP limits me to 21. I tried changing
the size via the "appearance/advanced/buttonsize" but it didn't
elminate the placement limit in the systray.

It would seem a registry hack is needed to override this programming..
anyone????

My questions would be:

1. Does this third party only "place" them in the Notification Area or are
they actually all running via Startup? If the latter, not good. If not,
forget third party and use the QL instead. However, either way you will have
a chevron at some point.

2. As per your question of the registry.... will add this to my to-do list
and get back to you. As it isn't one I have ever been asked to work on by a
poster.

Good luck in the meantime. :o)

yes, it only places them in the systray, they are not running till
clicked on... What is the QL?

I've reduced the number of icons for now, as I couldn't see them all
anyway.. but I would prefer to have them across the bottom

actually I installed the deskmenu powertoy from win98, it's not my
first choice, but better than using the "start" button/program menus.

I don't like the clutter on my desktop though. ;-( but it's usually
behind a few windows anyway.
