I'm suspecting patch 819696 is causing all the problems I'm experiencing
recently, such as broken Windows Installers (hangs when installing or
un-installing applications), and broken IIS. My IIS does not work anymore,
and the IIS MMC does not start. Any ideas what I can try to do to fix these
problems? Thanks.

Hi

There are no reported problems with 819696. How did that update 'break' IIS? Observations and notes from yourself would help - inc any repro. The same observations/notes would help toward the solution of your 'broken' Windows Installer(s). If you can provide enough info., then I will report these problems.

Next time close your antivirus and other 49 background apps before you
upgrade your OS.

I can't uninstall Norton, it hangs. I'll leave it there and see if it will
"unhang" itself. I managed to install DirectX 9.0b and MSN Messenger 6 after
leaving them for over 30 minutes.

Hi

Uninstall any Norton products that you may have on your system - reboot 3/4
times to make sure that they are gone. Your problems will then be behind
you.

Forget about Norton.

Using Windows XP you can use Event Viewer to review Error Reports.

1. To open Event Viewer, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, double-click Event Viewer and select System for system errors or Application for application errors. Look for Error in the Type column and double click on Error to reveal a Description of the error. This can be copied by using Clipboard Viewer (see later).

2. Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should double click for further information and you can copy using copy and paste.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

3. For some errors you will find "+ Related Knowledge Base Article", which if double clicked takes you to the Knowledge Base Article containing a suggested solution.

There always seems to be a step 2 but not always a step 3.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports (Step 1). Run Event Viewer and double click on the error you want to copy. In the window which appears is a button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your message ( email )and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer. It can be helpful to place a shortcut to Event Viewer on your Desktop.

....and your solution works with just 819696 or all upgrades...? I have seen a lot of postings with help for update problems, but no evidence... If anyone is going to post a 'fix' for an update problem, please include all details. Someone can then report this, with the fix, to the appropriate authorities.

Plato - any evidence available from you?

Thanks Gerry for the advise. After all, it was Norton that was causing the
problems.

I wholeheartly agree with Will 100% after all the issues I have had with
Norton. And you can uninstall them. Just uninstall <all> of them from the
add/remove programs . You will get some error messages if you are running
more than one Norton Product I was running 3 and when trying to delete reg
update and live update windows would not let me for they were dependent on
another program (Norton personal firewall) which i had to uninstall first.
After that all my problems were cured. Obviously not a Norton advocate, but
that is only my opinion, it works great for some I have heard! :)
