NTLDR is missing, press any key to restart....

From a newsgroup post by late Mr.Alex Nichol, Microsoft MVP:

The MBR code hands the boot on to the Active partition; the boot code in
that loads NTLDR. There are two cases:

"NTLDR not found" at all may arise because the incorrect partition has been
set as active. This can happen if you have a dual boot and have messed with
the files in that partition that boot; this is not the XP one, or have
shifted the boot to the XP partition which does not have NTLDR in it.

"NTLDR damaged" means what it says, the file is there but not working.

Either way, if you have a proper retail type XP CD, not some maker's
recovery disk:

Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard Disk. Boot the XP CD and, instead of
Setup, take the immediate R for Repair. Assume any password requested is
blank, and TAB over. Assuming this sees the CD as D (likely) give:

COPY D:\i386\ntldr C:\
COPY D:\i386\ntdetect C:\
(a file that may also be missing)
then rebuild the boot configuration boot.ini file by
Attrib -H -R -S C:\boot.ini
(if not found skip the next line)
DEL C:\boot.ini
BootCfg /Rebuild

I have the same error and I see the potential causes. Question - I am trying
to boot from a copy of XP PRO I purchased over the internet and copied to CD.
It seemed reputable. Comes with a recognizabe MS format serial number. Is
this the probably cause of my error ie was this a junk purchase?

Second - I have a retail copy of XP PRO I bought for full price at Staples.
I've already used that on another machine. But can I use that disk to trouble
shoot eg to see if it installs correctly? Then what do I have to do to
become "legal"? Thanks

Microsoft does NOT allow their software to be downloaded. The only
legitimate way to obtain it is to buy a CD copy with a hologram on it that
says "GENUINE." An example of this is the retail copy you mentioned in your
second question. You should report that you got scammed by an unreputable
retailer to Microsoft. They will take the piracy case from there.

You need to purchase another license. Speak with Microsoft on how to go
about getting this accomplished.
