Well, you are asking about replacing the Taskbar, but I don't have that.

But as far as launching applications, I think SlickRun is great. I just
type in a short abbreviation for any program that I want to run (they are
very easy to add; by drag and drop, for example), and off I go. I don't
have to mess with layers of cascading menus, quick launch toolbar, or any of
that stuff. It's a really clean and uncluttered way to run your computer.

LaunchMate is highly recommended - works on every version of Windows from 95
(I think) to XP.

Can store a vast number of programs under separate categories, any of which
can be reached in two mouse clicks (select category, then select program).

It can also be configured to live on top of other programs but can take up
only a single line at the top / bottom / side of your screen and
auto-unhides when your mouse touches it.

One feature which is not often available if that a program can be set to
change the screen resolution when run, and reset it when it closes.

Lastly, it's freeware - of course !

It's really great.
Since I started using it my desktop is absolutely clean :-)

I use it also to display the free memory percentage (before the date).
