It may not be that helpful to you, but I've set up my own Yahoo email to forward all messages to
my ISP pop3 email address. Comes in very useful as it also means that my Yahoo emails can be
filtered through Mailwasher & I can delete the ones I don't want before downloading.

You need a POP account for Yahoo, 19.95 per year, I don't know of any
freeware versions out there.

if you are looking for something just for exchanging email while traveling

road with your laptop .. then, all you need is access to the internet

access,
as are public libraries, coffee houses like Starbucks, etc. You ought to
buy
a wireless adapter for your laptop in such cases. Otherwise, you might
consider a freebie nation-wide email/internet account from Juno or NetZero,
etc.
