XP Icon Raider v1.01
The XP Icon Raider is a simple utility that allows you to replace the
existing Windows 95, 98, or ME shell icons with the new Windows XP
icons. One click and you're done. This utility will replace all icon
settings to point to the new library, it doesn't harm those you have
now. If you have any special icons setup for the recycle bin, etc. just
re-enable them as you normally would if you decide not to use those
supplied. Includes a full revert (undo) in 3 areas just in case you do
not like the new icons. Download XP Icon Raider now and start using it
today!
File size: 134 KB
Requires : Windows 9x/ME/XP

I'm not sure if it was this program or something from MS...(I think it was the
latter),
but last year I tried this changing 98 to 'look like XP'.... well, here's a heads up:
there is one program (the one I used) that will NOT allow you to dump that
boot up ergonomic (sp) ugly blue XP logo! You can chang the icons back to
'classic', but you can NOT get rid of that horrible LOCKED IN FOREVER
XP logo! You can check for 'hidden' files. This monster is an unnamed sys folder
and will NOT delete regardless of what you do or use. So if you want to kill it,
you will have to reformat your hard drive. The latter is a no-go, so on my 98 machine
I just endure this ugly monster at boot up...and let it serve as a reminder ...

This looks interesting. As a followup, I came across a more recent
version [v 2.11] and according to the site, DA is no longer
maintained or fully compatible with XP. Looks just great for my old
98se though:

EFX is a Titlebar/Appframe reskinner, giving a good degree of "XP
Like" or other effects on Win98.

Never got past 0.4 beta, I found it a little unstable, and it's now a
bit hard to find.

Do you know where to find a theme (that looks like WinXP) for DA?

Do you appreciate the beauty of the XP operating system's desktop, but
are just fine with the non-XP Windows version residing on your computer?
Now you can get the look and feel of Windows XP without having to
reinstall your OS or open your wallet. This theme changes your folder,
Start menu, and desktop icons, making them identical to Windows XP's.
The background is a view of a green hill and open sky, and you can
choose from three color schemes in adjusting the program and dialog
boxes. It uses Desktop Architect, which must be installed prior to
loading this program. (below)

The best of the best little desktop theme tools all wrapped up into one
great program. Other than the fact that it's FREE, the outstanding
features are just too numerous to list every one here. After extensively
testing Desktop Architect's nearly limitless features in comparison with
Microsoft Plus!, here are just a few of the remarkable options you'll
have with this updated version.

Just replace explorer with an alternative shell like litestep or bb4win
(bblean variant recommended) and not only will your desktop look better but
your computer will run faster as well.
