This is an extract frpm XP Help and support, just in case you don't
know about it.

Fax provides you with complete fax facilities from your computer. You
can configure fax settings, send and receive faxes, track and monitor
fax activity, and access archived faxes. Using Fax, you can choose to
send and receive faxes with a local fax device attached to your
computer, or with a remote fax device connected to fax resources
located on a network.

Fax is not installed by default during Windows Setup.

To install the Fax component
Open Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.
Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
In the Windows Components Wizard, select the Fax Services check box,
and then follow the instructions on your screen.
Notes

To open Fax after installation, click Start, point to All Programs,
point to Accessories, point to Communications, and then click Fax
Console.
For more information on using Fax, click Help in Fax Console.

Hi all,

Any freewaer FAX program to be used with broadband internet under XP?

TIA
If I recall correctly you can not fax with cable, but can with dsl. I
have cable and would have to put in an old modem and phone line to fax.

XP Fax only works with a Dial-up Modem. It does not work with Cable or ADSL
Broadband.

Essentially it's saying that you would still be faxing through a regular
dial-up modem on a standard telephone line. It has absolutely nothing to do
with DSL/ADSL/broadband/etc.

Faxing Options for DSL or Cable Modems
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/crawford_02october21.mspx

You can't use your DSL or cable connection for faxing. A new
technology, Voice over IP (VoIP) will undoubtedly make this possible in
the future. VoIP is an inexpensive alternative to traditional telephone
communication that operates over the public switched telephone network
(PSTN). VoIP covers computer-to-computer, computer-to-telephone, and
telephone-based communications. For more information about VoIP, read
the Voice-over-IP Overview and the VoIP FAQ from DLS Reports.
If you're without a modem or you don't want to tie up your phone line,
an Internet-based fax service might work best for you.

Hello guys,

Thanks for the input ... so it means nothing in this stage for ADSL users.
Most of the internet based ones bellow are not free and others i read don't
work with ADSL.

Yea thanks, I already have the modem, but how the modem works with ADSL?
I am talking about a dial up modem that you can install internally into
your pc. The dial up modem works independently from your adsl or cable
modem.

You would probably have to disable your ADSL modem to use the FAX.

No. There should be a Z Blocker filter in the line unless
someone has installed a dedicated DSL line which is a
complete waste of a perfectly good phone line to use for
other purposes like the FAX modem.

Wrong - I have cable, my sister has adsl. We both fax using the dialup
without having to disable anything. Works like a charm.
