yes - most modern email clients have this function - it's called
"Read-Receipt". OE has it, Outlook has it, Thunderbird has it etc etc etc.

They can't stop delivery notification however, as long as the server
supports it.....

Yeah, I saw one (don't remember the name); it worked like this:

You send your email, along with the eventual receipient, to their server.

They imbed a 1-pixel bug in the HTML email that calls their server whenever
the email is opened. The bug reports when, who, and on what machine the
email was opened. Further, every time the email is forwarded and opened, you
get another report.

Very clever.
