I recently had to upgrade my version of Java due to upgrading the software
that speaks to my UPS, it's now Version 12 from sun systems, is there any
great advantage to using the newer version for the OS or pc in general?

The newest version of Java from Sun is version 5. If you are writing
Java programs, you might benefit from the new options in J2SE 5.0. If
you're just running applets in web pages you encounter, it would
depend on whether the developers of those applets used methods or
classes only available in J2SE 5.0.

JAVA 2 Platform Standard Edition = Version 1.5.0 (build 1.5.0_06-b05)
Control Panel > Java Applecation > Update = you have the latest build...
