AntivVir updates - are they still full size each time?

I uninstalled AntiVir and returned to AVG some months ago because the
downloads were always very large and server access was very patchy.
Is this still the case?

I am using the new version 7 now and find it pretty good. The first
update it does after a fresh install is rather large as it seems to be
updating about 6 or 7 files. After that, it's nice and quick.

Access to their servers here in my area (Los Angeles) seems to be
limited though. I can only get thru about 12 hours a day. So I have to
schedule updates just once a day rather than say every 4 hours.

Also, there is an annoying and IMO unnecessary nag screen/ad that pops
up every time it does update the virus defs. I wish they would remove
this. This more or less makes it adware to me..

Otherwise, it's a good AV.

nagware? But you have this problem also with version 6.
You must already have blocked that notifying program.
Block or deactivate avnotify.exe
But Antivir loves to reactivate the program, so you have to block it from
time to time again.

AntiVir is still converting users via the updater from v6 to v7.

Their forum has a lot of people complaining at the moment (altho
Kerodo in this thread seems ok). The official line is that the
upgrades are a heavy load on the servers and that it wil be ok after
the upgrade rollout has taken place.

I have got v7 but my updates to it are timing out - and that is after
20 or more minutes!

In version 6 you could just rename the file 'avnotify.exe' and the ads
would stop. Now, in version 7, if you rename or remove it, the updater
downloads it and puts it back. So that won't work anymore. If you deny
it internet access with a firewall, you get a popup telling you not to
do that, with a checkbox to stop the message. However, when you check
the box, hoping it will stop, it just pops up again next time. So that
doesn't work either. The only way to really stop it is to prevent
'avnotify.exe' from executing. Then you're ok.

Perhaps replace 'avnotify.exe' with Dud?

Create a .BAT file with the single line "exit" and call it
avnotify.exe. That should fix matters.

Easier yet, just modify the file's security settings and deny it
execution rights for all users. Worked for me.

Did you choose a complete or custom installation?

You should have selected "shell extension" in the "Install Components"
dialog box during a custom installation. I think it automatically
installs with a "complete" installation.

Here's the manual:

I don't see any way to enable the shell extension in the configuration
menu, but perhaps re-installing will allow you to do this.
