Who will give an unbiased opinion which of the Antivirus programmes
available is the best?

There is no such thing as an "Unbiased" opinion. All kinds of criteria
factor
into it: Are you interested in just AV or some Security Suite >?

If "Free" is paramount, then AVG Free or Avast

If "Market Share"/"Namebrand" then McAfee or Symantec

Then there are many others to choose from:
Kaspersky
Panda
Nod32
eTrust
Trend-Micro
Sophos
F-Secure Each has +/- associated with them

Professionally speaking I deploy eTrust 7.0 ($20 per year) or if cost is
considered AVG Free 7.1.

Almost everyone has an opinion, and almost everyone's opinion is biased.

That's the problem with questions like this. Just about every product out
there has its partisans, and if you get enough answers you'll get
recommendations for all the alternatives. That leaves you no better off than
where you started.

That said, since you asked for opinions, here's mine: I run Avast on all
three machines here and I'm hasppy with it.

I will. None of them are best. The best option is to have 2 different
anti-virus programs installed but only run one of them 24/7 if you are
into background apps. Use the second as a double check now and then.
Like when putting the roast into the oven. Let it run and do a full
scan.

I second Avast. But AVG is good also. Try it, you'll like it. Free is the
right price.

There is no such thing as an unbiased opinion. Those capable have no human
experiences. Best you can expect is a lesser biased opinion among many.

That's why they call it an "opinion" and not a "fact".

The OP used the modifier "unbiased" before the word "opinion". The
"unbiased opinion", not "opinion" was what Ken was talking about. No smiley
face, wasn't funny.

No one, and especially not LameGirl!

What I'd recommend is either the free versions of AVG or Avast, with
weekly scans from free online scanners.

And my bias is against companies that rape their customers with AV
protection pricing.

I'm afraid that the phrase "unbiased opinion" is something of an
oxymoron. ;-} You'll get nearly as many differing opinions as you will
responses.

I used, and recommended, Norton Antivirus and then Norton Internet
Security, for many years, on Win98, WinNT, Win2K, and WinXP, all without
any significant problems. I had used McAfee prior to that. But it's
been several years since I've been tempted to try McAfee products. Their
quality seemed to take a steep nose-dive after they were acquired by
Network Associates.

However, when my subscription to Symantec's updates for Norton
Internet Security 2002 came up for renewal (at a cost substantially
higher than the preceding year's subscription), I decided to try less
expensive solutions. I downloaded and installed the free version of
GriSoft's AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php ) and the free
version of Sygate's Personal Firewall
(http://smb.sygate.com/free/default.php ). Both have proven to be
easily installed, easy to use, and quite effective. Additionally, I was
pleasantly surprised to see a small but very noticeable improvement in
my PC's performance, once I'd replaced the Symantec product.

A relative of mine bought Norton AV 2006. After install he lost his
icons, email file and a couple of other items. In complaining to Symantec
they said that the AV was not to blame. He has asked for a refund. This is
the 2nd complaint that I have read about NAV 2006. I have 2 machines with
the defs expiring in December. Upgrading defs is now $49.95.
Symantec has lost my 2 machines. I'm looking elsewhere starting
tomorrow!

I have always been a cheap bastard and my wife and I used
common sense for years without any viruses or spyware issues

Now my daughter is another story, so AVG free and MS
AntiSpyware have been installed. Netither has found any bugs
yet

Isn't that essentially what I said in the line you quoted above "...and
almost everyone's opinion is biased"?
