Anti-Virus Software Locks-up XP During Scheduled Daily Scans

I have Norton AntiVirus set-up to automatically scan my computer daily.
And, once in a while (not always) it locks-up my computer requiring a hard
reboot. The time into the scan when the computer locks-up varies by a few
minutes each day it happens, but usually within the first 15 to 40 minutes.
I have changed the scan time to something different thinking that perhaps
there may be a conflict with other software scheduled to run either before
or immediately after. No such luck. And, my computer has never locked-up
when I do a manual scan. Needless to say, I've checked for viruses (I even
did the free scan on McAffee's web site) with nothing coming up. Any
suggestions on what to check from here would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello,
I had a similar problem, and contacted Symantec. They suggested the
following; Open Anti Virus, Options, Manual scan, UNCHECK scan within
compressed files, and OK(This was in System Works 2003, but I assume it will
be the same for their anti-virus stand alone)...Their reason was vague, but
said that scanning some larger files will sometimes cause this. Hope this
helps.
