I misspelled the Subject content because I am experiencing the weirdest
phenomenon. My above av program just seemed to disappear from my system
sometime after downloading SP2. It was initially there and working then it
was gone. I didn't notice it at first and only noticed something strange
when I launched Word 2000 and got an error message that a template was
"still infected" "do you want to delete it" I clicked 'yes' but still could
not open any Word documents. When I clicked 'no' it opened the selected
doc. I got PO at SP2 and uninstalled it using A/R Programs.

This got me thinking about a possible v so I ran update and it ran ok. I
then tried to run my av and the hour glass pops up and quickly disappears.
I checked the Programs File and while update program was still there the av
program file was empty. I tried the sym... website and received a could not
display. Tried through a search engine and got kicked out of IE (to my
desktop) or received a 'could not display.' Went to my v file in OE and get
kicked out of OE (back to my desktop). Note the v file label is spelled
correctly.

It seems that if I attempt to access an av using the correct spelling for
Norten and/or Viris my system revolts. I know it's weird but could there be
a viris targeted against the av coms?

Yes it is possible to have a virus that will block your installed
antivirus from working.

1. Download Stinger (free) from http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger and
save it to the desktop on the problem computer or to a 3.5 inch
diskette if you download it using another computer. It is only 800 KB
or so in size. Then boot your problem computer into Safe Mode and
run Stinger. It will detect and remove over 40 of the most common of
the current viruses.

2. Another option would be to go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com
and do their free online virus scan.

It is also possible for a spyware infestation to affect a computer in
this manner, and antivirus programs do not do anything about most of
the spyware products because technically they are not viruses as they
do not replicate themselves. Go to MVP Jim Eshelman's Spyware Quick
Fix page at http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm and follow the
instructions there.

Good luck

No, it is not right.
It is a kind of file corruption.
You need to uninstall and reinstall your antivirus.

Thanks. I tried many things and went to System Restore to back in August
before I installed SP2. The level where I didn't loose any data. wife is
a photog and there is 30 gig of photos on the system. Backed up to CD's of
course in RAW. Norton was installed again and I updated and ran it but do
virus detected. My IE still does a few funny things but I guess I will find
out if there si a virus.
