another q on using BOTH domain (for work) and workgroup (for home)

I've read the messages about a portable computer for work joined to a domain
and a solution for accessing workgroups from that computer by mapping the
drive with \\netid.

This is especially helpful since I actually have a couple of workgroups that
I need to access for different volunteer activities, and want to share
printers and files.

My problem is that when I try this, it prompts me for a username and
password on my workgroup based computer. I have multiple user accounts,
but they don't have passwords so I'm not sure how to log on.

I probably have winxp firewall set up... is that the problem?

Options?

Every account has a password, without exception, even if it is a
blank password. Have you tried a blank password? If it does
not work then it's time you gave yourself a password. Make sure
the logon names and passwords match on the various PCs.

How are you trying to connect? Is it a wired network or wireless?

Generally, if the network is setup properly, then it should
automatically provide IP addresses automatically using DHCP (dynamic
host control protocol). This should allow you to use internet and most
probably printers. If you don't have access to printers then you can
use TCP/IP to connect to the printers.

To use the file sharing then you will need to log on to the server which
hosts files etc. Have you tried plugging in the cables to see if you
can connect to basic services?

I think I figured it out. Turns out that I had a drive mapped and that
computer defined in network places.

Something must happen to access to mapped workgroup drives when I change my
password at work... I know the windows password cache gets reset at that
time.

So it looks like I have to unmap the drives then I can map them again... or
not map at all. When it asks me for UserID and password, I just type tab
for password and now it's working fine.

For the record, I first did try adding a password and tested that it worked,
then tried accessing via \\computername and that didn't work either... I
typed in the password and no luck.

BUT when I tried mapping a drive to \\computername\sharename I got a
slightly different name that was more specific and told me the problem was
that I was already mapped.

Once I unmapped all the drives, I could actually open the printer too. It
was saying that access was denied.

Just curious....Any clue why changing the domain password/windows cache
messes up the mapping access?

Thanks!
