Annoying pop up toolbar? not an adware window

I am plagued by a recurring floating toolbar/context menu that appears
primarily when I am browsing the web but periodically in other programs. It
has a listing of my recent documents. It does not have the normal controls
like send to, close that would allow me to close it. the only way to make it
go away is to open one of the documents. It does not respond to right
clicking. And you cannot make it go away by click in a another area of the

desktop. I was thinking that it is a remnant from a pop up attack but I

cannot get any of the major programs to find malware. When the (toolbar?

menu?) pops up it steals the focus of the computer and all other processes
(including my internet connection)slow down and the hard drive begins to
spin. I think it is trying to send something off my computer. I have no Idea
what to do. I am running Adaware, hijack this, Norton Anti Virus 2004. l
also have both Netscape and IE 6.0 running.

save the latest virus update file on the C drive then boot with the Norton
CD do a complete scan make sure it is scanning all files and has the
heuristics turned all the way up.

Make sure you have the latest updates when running adaware I have had really
good luck with it.

Try an XP system restore from a point that was prior to the discovery
of the pop-up. You also might try downloading Spybot Search and Destroy.
It is another well respected spyware remover that sometimes finds things
that AdAware misses. I run them both on my machine. After you download
it, make sure the first thing you do is download an update of the
crapware database.
