Annoyin Comp

For the last few weeks wheneva i turn my comp on the
monitor says 'VGA In' (as usual), but then displays 'No
Video' message and goes to power saving mode. After a few
restarts it does normally work, but is v annoyin. We had
an "expert" take a look at it, he thought it was graphics
card, but that was fine, he said the files where all over
the place so defragmented the files but it still doesnt
work properly, he's contacted microsoft to see if they
know what the problem is.

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Do you have a motherboard which has an 'onboard' graphics card: and possibly a second plug in AGP card to which the monitor is attached now.

Check that your BIOS settings for the video properly match your hardware configuration. Also check that the AGP settings for the card [in BIOS] are appropriate for the performance of your specfic AGP card.

If these are all correct, check also that your monitor 'device driver' is correct in Device Manager or Display Properties [both get to the same end] whichever is easier for you to access. Also check in DIsplay Properties, that your power savings and other items are set correctly.
 
Unfortunately, this all occurs at the hardware level and has absolutely
nothing to do with Windows or any data on the harddrive. This would
happen even if you unplugged your harddrive. What is happeneing here
could be what BAR wrote at first and there is one other possibility that
he sort of hinted at. Once you get the computer to boot, go into your
BIOS and make sure that AGP is the first video card used. If it is set
to this, try setting it to PCI and see what happens. Sometimes the
signal from the BIOS gets sent before the video card is ready and then
it fails to respond or sometimes it doesn't get the message at all.
Also, double check and make sure the video card is not coming loose at
all and the connection is tightly plugged in. It may help you to update
your BIOS if this is possible as well ;)
