AN UNKNOWN ERROR HAS OCCURED IN WINDOWS MAIL (VISTA MAIL)

Every time I receive incoming mail I get a prompt saying: "An unknown error
has occurred" - every single time.

This is a brand new computer system so I truly don't understand or like this
at all. What should I do please? There is no recourse and I'm clueless to
what is causing it. It's been 2 weeks now and I'm very flustered. I Googled
the error message and that was no help at all, literally.

I'm ready to chuck it and install Thunderbird, Opera, Incredimail, Windows
Live, Eudora, etc. etc.

Please help me and don't refer me to some website or knowledge base. Been
there, done that.

I have Vista Premium Homed Edition 32 bit and use ESET Smart Security Suite
with all settings at "default". Have been using it for years + years with no
problems at all. Also, have less than 20 programs ( if that many) on here as
it's brand spanking new, so what could be the problem??? Please advise ASAP.

I have the same exact PC setup - identical and the same exact security
software. Absolutely no changes at all. None. Zilch. So why am I getting
this extremely annoying message a dozen times a day? I am going crazy trying
to figure this out but I need help. Badly.

Help me resolve this and I will owe everyone BIG TIME forever. :-)

Gratefully,

Windows Mail is especially sensitive to interference from intrusive
antivirus programs. Unless you turn off email scanning in ESET, the
problem will only get worse.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for
reasons explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from intrusive antivirus programs.

And you would be replying to whom?

Here's another tip: Don't post or use your real email address in a public newsgroup or forum.
I never had any problem before with ESET scanning my email for years. None at all. Why do you now say it is only going to get worse? What do you know that you are not telling us? Is something about to develop or change? Nobody should ever NOT have their email scanned. That is the most vulnerable asking for trouble thing I've ever read on the Internet, no offense or disrespect intended at all.

If Microsoft makes Windows Live compatible for email scanning then why don't they also make Windows Mail (or Vista Mail) compatible as well? I'm still confused with the total lack of logic here and plain old fashioned common sense. Help me out here somebody please.

Not even Windows Live Mail or Outlook are compatible with antivirus email scanning.
Most tech support specialists agree with the advice given here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

Antivirus-related problems may take a while to show up. It's like playing Russian
roulette with a revolver having only one chamber out 1000 loaded with a bullet.
You never know when the random loaded chamber comes under the firing pin.

The email scanning function is in the AV product because all the competitors
include it, and it makes for another bullet on the box for naive buyers.
But even Symantec (Norton), the originator of the email scanning concept
admits that it is redundant and unnecessary:

"Is my computer still protected against viruses if I disable Email Scanning?
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses
that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect
scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email
and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this.
To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto- Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions."

The bottom line is that you need to learn to trust the advice from seasoned tech
support specialist who have worked with these types of problems for many years.
