Hi, I'm looking to build a system based around this processor but there
appears to be some variances on spec:

2.2ghz clock or 2.4?
800mhz fsb or 1600?

Also, motherboard recommendations? (AGPx8 and/or PCI express)
Thanks.

Certainly not 1600 (the current fastest HyperTransport is 1000MHz)

I've got an MSI K8N Neo 2 (after reading a lot of reviews) and I'm very
happy with it!

I would say, however, if you are getting a hungry gfx card (e.g. 6800+)
then get a decent power supply. I tried to use my old unbranded 350W
one and it blew stability wise! Upgraded to an Antec 430W TruePower and
it's steady as a rock!

Cheers,

Andy

thanks, that's good info.

trouble is, your motherboard recommendation is a skt 939 - not a skt 754
which the 3400+ is.

Anyone got motherboard recommendations for the 3400+ ?

I recommend that you get a Socket 939, instead. It'll have a longer life
with upgrades, as socket 754 and socket A are about to be killed off. If
you were planning PCI Express, your only choice is Socket 939.

Also, PCI Express is the way to go for the future. However, it's new
technology and we're getting the first implementations of it. However, if
it was my money, I'd take the plunge to PCI Express.

Beware that nForce 3 (socket 754) and nForce 4 (socket 939) boards are
having problems with the newest Athlon 64's because of some change in the
CPU. Supposedly, a BIOS upgrade _may_ fix it, but maybe you want to hang on
for a couple of weeks and see what happens about the issue if you planned
on an nVidia chipset.

mmmmmmm thanks - good info.
out of interest, the only reason i was going for the 754 was for price -
maybe if pci express is a bit fresh, i would be better going for yesterday's
system - say 75% of max performance for 40% of the cost. i reckon future
proofing is not really possible in today's fast moving market - may as well
spen less for a little less performance, but more regularly update - say
every 3 years or so.
