I am looking for a client that will connect to a VSS database, but won't
suck like the standard VSS 6.0d client. Is there such a thing?

Thank

That depends on what parts of the standard VSS 6.0d client you think suck.
There are other clients, such as Source OffSite from SourceGear. Whether
or not it is any better than the VSS client comes down to your opinion of
better. http://www.sourcegear.com/sos/index.html

The only thing that sucks more than the VSS client is the VSS storage.
Really, you're much better off finding a better source control system. While
the interface for most CVS clients for windows aren't that great, it's a
MUCH more reliable system and much more feature rich.

Just my opinion, but I'll never use VSS again. Lost way too much data to it.
I used to have a link to a web site that enumerated all the things you
shouldn't do with VSS lest you lose your data and I can't seem to find it
anymore. Sorry. It was a good page.

Anyway, like I said, my opinion is you'd be better of with any of the MANY
alternatives, and CVS is free.

Well, Source OffSite from SourceGear can be used only if we installed
its server piece. I am a contractor here and have no power to do such
things.

As far as the part that sucks... My biggest gripe is that there isn't
"Open working directory" option in the context menu, like exists in
every other source control client ever created.

Talk them into using Subversion and use the TortoiseSVN shell integration
client.
TortoisSVN uses the Windows shell as the source control client. It's very
nice. I'm using it on my current project.
