Alternative players?

Assuming I have a fast machine with plenty of memory and space, and that I
know how to block them from phoning home, why would I choose alternatives
to Quicktime and Realplayer rather than the real things?
And while I am about it why would I choose an alternative pdf reader to
Adobe Reader?
I have the alternatives to all three installed; then I got to thinking -
why?

In this case the alternatives is basically the real thing, with some fat
removed and annoyances (phoning home is just the beginning) cut off.

Speed, probably. And maybe portability. That being said, the real thing
probably delievers higher quality renderings than any alternatives I have
been offered so far.

My own reason for going with QT & Real Alternative is that I find the way
the "real things" work objectional. IMO they are certainly anoyance if not
spyware. Like you, I know how to block "features" like phoning home, but I
think that to install the software at all is giving one's agreement to and
also encouraging the business practices of the companies releasing those
products (I wouldn't even class them as freeware personally)

Just my....erm, is it appropriate to offer 2 cents worth in a freeware
newsgroup? ;)

Another reason is that RealPlayer really digs itself into your system. The
Alternative programs are much friendlier about this.
