Alt_F4 doesn't work. What are my options?

Suddenly Alt_F4 doesn't work any more. In any program. Could I have somehow disabled this shortcut? And is there any way of
changing the shortcut to something else? I find it rather awkward to do with my left hand. I don't want to have to take my right
hand off the mouse to close programs. The odd thing is that I programmed a mouse shortcut for the Close shortcut (Alt_F4) and that
works great. You'd think that if the command doesn't work the shortcut to the command wouldn't work either. But sometimes I need
Alt_F4.

First, test whether both these keys are fully functional.
Keyboards now are so cheap they seem likely to fail sooner
rather than later, and in just this way.

Problem solved. I had disabled the key accidentally in my Microsoft keyboard preferences.
