Is there a way of finding out the alt-keystroke combination eg alt0221
for a foreign text character in a word file.

What is it you are really trying to do here?
ALT+0221 is an accented upper case Y. I don't know if it will translate in
the news format but - Ý
What do you want to do with it?

Hi Branston,

If you select the Ý and then open the "Insert > Symbol" dialog, you should
see the code 221 (in the status bar under the document in Word2000, or in
the dialog itself in Word2002).
