Allowing for more than 15 digits when downloading from another source

I know that Excel will not allow a 16-digit + number
without changing the 16th, etc. digit to zero and that I
can combat this by formatting the cell as text and then
typing my number. However, I am trying to download data
to Excel from web-based accounting software and therefore
do not have the option to format the cell as text
beforehand. If I format after the fact, it does me no
good, as the zeros are already present.

Any suggestions?

Paste special as text. Or paste into a text editor, save the file
as a text file, open it in excel will trigger the text import wizard,
in step 3 you can select text under column data format.

Edit>paste special

I keep telling you guys that I'm not overly bright.

My versions of XL2k & XP & XL97 *don't* have an actual "text" choice in
"PasteSpecial".

Is it labeled as something else and you *consider* it a "text" paste?

Are you copying from a different application?

Try opening Notepad and putting some test data in there.

Then copy it.

Then back to excel and rightclick|paste special.

You should get a whole different dialog.

Hey Dave,

Thanks again for leading me by the hand.
I'm having more and more of these senior moments lately.

I see this dialog every day when I go back and forth between XL and OE, and
STILL, I just couldn't put it together in this particular case.

But, I guess this tells me that I'm still alive, 'cause I'd stop getting
older if I wasn't.!

Unfortunately, I don't get the option. As soon as I
export to Excel or as a text file (my only two options),
I lose the 16th + digits to zeros.

If I copy and paste the data instead of exporting, I lose
the leading zeros I need in the same field. I think I'm
just out of luck.

Thanks anyway!

What type of file is the acct program saving the export as? You should be able
to tell it a file name and then save it to your HD before opening in Excel.

If so, before opening with Excel, change the ext of the file to .txt. Then
Excel will open the import wizard and you can change the column in question to
text

It doesn't prompt me to save as a particular type. I
just click export and it opens a new Excel window with
the results (regardless of which link I choose - Download
to Excel or Download as Text file).

I'm sure my IT department would have to see what the link
is actually doing, but they probably won't change it. I
think we'll just find another way around the problem.

Thanks!
