When teaching, it would be VERY useful to print the formatting marks in a
document to show students where they make mistakes. I have discussed this
issue with instructors at our university and other universities in the area
and we ALL agree that this is needed.

I agree that this would be a useful feature; it is often requested in these
NGs, and the only practical solution currently available is a series of
screen shots. How it could be managed, though, is hard to imagine.

Microsoft will probably never do this because it won't increase their
profits. It is mostly useful to a very limited market of academic
types who already pay almost nothing for the product.

On the other hand, if you were willing to settle for an imperfect job,
you (or someone encouraged by the hope of fame or fortune) could write
a macro that would transform the document into one that shows
formatting marks.

turn off spelling and grammar

find replace

paragraph mark literal pilcrow plus paragraph mark
space dot character
soft return arrow character plus soft return
and so on...

If you wanted to expose fields, you could copy the guts, delete the
field, and put back the guts with added plain brace characters
