allow inbox messages to stay until deleted

My inbox messages are disappearing after about 12 days and can't be found. I
would like them to stay in the inbox until I delete them. How can I change
this setting?

Might it be auto-archiving kicking in and moving the messages to an archive
PST file? Check for the archive name here: Tools menu > Options > Other >
AutoArchive. You can open that file using the File menu > Open > Outlook
Data File command

Thanks Vince, I did what you said and unclicked the auto archive feature.
But I went to File, open, outlook data, and found the personal folder, but
either there was nothing in it or I didn't know how to open it. The was a
space below to type in file name, but I don't know the specific name of the
email I want. I just want to retrieve an email from about 3 weeks ago.

Double check to see if there are any other PST files on your system that
might contain the item. You can't open an individual email item from the
File open dialog.
