All Shortcut/Links do not work - XP Home

As the subject indicates, all my shortcut/links on Desktop
and Start Menu do not work. When viewing the Properties,
they still point to the proper locations, but clicking the
icons or selecting them in the Start/Programs menu will
not work. Additionally, the icons are of a single default
graphic - they do not reflect the program visually as they
use to (like MS-Word was a blue "W" and Excel was a
green "X").

My son had an evening of playing games, this is what I was
presented with the next morning when I booted up.
