Hi Rick,

No luck with fix. i think the cause was a program called medload.exe (origin
unknown). I click on open with Excel and now everything tries to use Excel. I
can get programs to work by right click on the exe file and then click on run
as, which shows my user account, then click Ok.
Since trying the fix I have got a couple of Registry error messages.
Everything seems to work except using the shortcuts, very frustrating.

Hi,

Start/run regedit, export these two keys to the desktop:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe (this is period - exe)

Then right click each and select edit. Copy/paste the contents of each into

Hi John,

Nothing wrong with that either. This is just a thought, but open Excel,
click tools/options and on the general tab there is an option to "ignore
other applications". If this is disabled, try enabling it.

I am curious as to why you are able to start IE/OE without a problem, but
not other applications. I am also wondering how recent this problem was in
that you may be able to use System Restore to get back to the point before
all this began.

Hi Rick,

Tried the Excel options but no luck. When I made the change and rebooted I
had about 20 windows open at start up in excel, but still had the problem.
I believe the problem started over a week ago when I was trying to get rid
of what I thought was spyware. I found a program medload.exe in Windows and
renamed it to Dumb, then I right clicked and got the option "open with" I
then clicked Excel and here I am. Don't know what is involved in system
restore but am contemplating reformatting and starting again. As I have said
I cannot access add/remove programs or control panel options.
I have been able to access individual files and change "open with" to use
the correct programs but the problem remains at a program level.

IE and OE seem to be at a higher level than my problem.
Further suggestions would be much appreciated.

Regards

John
